NEWS RELEASE DATE January 17, 2010 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: David C. Simons (912) 897-6185 (912) 713-4944 cell REP. ROBERTS REAPPOINTED CHAIRMAN OF HOUSE TRANSPORTATION COMMITTEE State Representative Jay Roberts (R-Ocilla) has been reappointed by Speaker Ralston as Chairman of the House Transportation Committee for the 2010 legislative session. The Transportation Committee hears legislation relating to highway safety, regulation of intrastate common carriers, and any other means of transportation. New this year due to the passage of SB200 last year during the 2009 legislative session, impressive changes were made to the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT). This bill changes the way transportation projects are planned and gives the legislature more input over the selection process in planning and funding the transportation projects. Also new this year, Governor Perdue appointed and the Transportation Committee approved the new Director of Planning for the GDOT. Although the state faces many challenges in regard to transportation, my committee members and the General Assembly members are committed to coming up with reliable solutions, not only for funding sources, but also for transportation infrastructure improvements. Statewide strategic solutions are the key to solving transportation issues; from rural areas, to the major cities, it is an issue for all of Georgia. Rep. Roberts stated, “I am honored to be reappointed by the newly elected Speaker Ralston. I appreciate the confidence that he has shown in my ability to lead the Transportation Committee. I look forward to working with everyone and coming up with reliable and effective transportation solutions.” Rep. Roberts represents Irwin and Telfair counties, in addition to portions of Ben Hill, Jeff Davis, Tift, and Wheeler Counties in the Georgia General Assembly. ###
